The Navajo Nation and Bloomfield city officials are set to sign an agreement aimed at improving race relations.
The signing was scheduled Monday evening in the northwestern New Mexico city.
The tribe began pursuing the largely symbolic agreements with towns that border the vast reservation after racial tensions flared in nearby Farmington years ago.
The agreement states that the two governments rely on one another for goods and services and must commit to a community free of discrimination.
Bloomfield is the fifth town to enter into such an agreement. The others are Gallup, Farmington and Grants in New Mexico, and Cortez, Colo.
The tribe’s human rights commissioners also plan to pursue agreements in the Arizona communities of Flagstaff, Holbrook, Page and Winslow.
